O presidente da Colômbia, Gustavo Petro, discursou nesta terça-feira, 20, na Assembleia Geral da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) e denunciou o fracasso da guerra antidrogas e seu rastro sangrento na América. “O consumo mortal tem aumentado, de drogas leves até as pesadas, ocorreu um genocídio em meu continente e em meu país, milhões de pessoas foram condenadas à prisão”, destacou o primeiro presidente de esquerda da Colômbia, principal país produtor mundial de cocaína.
Em um discurso direcionado aos países consumidores, Petro pediu para “acabar com a irracional guerra contra as drogas”. “Se não corrigirmos o rumo e esta guerra se prolongar outros 40 anos, os Estado Unidos verão 2.800.000 jovens morrerem de overdose” e “mais um milhão de latino-americanos serão mortos”, disse o líder.
O presidente enfatizou que a estratégia que vem sendo usada há quatro décadas para acabar com o negócio lucrativo deixa apenas centenas de milhares de mortos na América do Norte e presídios superlotados no restante do continente.
Desde sua posse no dia 7 de agosto, Petro insiste em focar na prevenção do consumo no lugar do que ele chama de perseguição aos cultivadores de folha de coca, a base da cocaína.
